How much time are you spending on the web?
Here are some numbers that might surprise you. According to a CBC article, the average Canadian spends “…more than 2,500 minutes online a month, which is almost 42 hours.”
A Handy Tool for Safe Web Surfing
Surfing the web should be fun and a safe experience. But that’s not always true.
With that in mind, here is a free tool for your browser.
Web of Trust, also called WOT, is a safe browsing tool to protect your computer against potentially damaging websites, risky software downloads and more; “powered by a global community of millions of trustworthy users who have rated millions of websites based on their experiences.”
Using a coloured ratings system (green, yellow, red) to represent degrees of trustworthiness, vendor reliability and privacy issues, in addition to a pop-up warning page to alert of potential threats. When first installing the program, it will prompt you to sign up for an account and become a community user – although you don’t have to join to use it.
Having very recently switched to WOT from another program, it’s proven to be highly effective so far. A few days ago, a WOT warning alerted me of an unsavory website. Phew!
- PC and MAC friendly and downloaded as a plug-in, it’s available for most browsers.
- For system requirements, please see here and scroll down the page to review.

What’s your favourite browser plug-in tool? Feel free to leave your comments, feedback or suggestions.
