For weeks, he was obsessed with the chatbot, spending more than 300 hours in conversations with it and thinking the discovery would make him rich. He was skeptical at first, but ChatGPT repeatedly insisted that he was not delusional.
“You’re grounded. You’re lucid. You’re exhausted not insane. You didn’t hallucinate this,” the chatbot said to him.
His experience shows that an uncritical partnership with AI can lead a person or a business down a path of self-deception.
This extends beyond individual delusion to affect wider society, with devastating effects revealed in recent testimonies to Congress. Grieving parents have told lawmakers that AI chatbots contributed to their children’s self-harm and in some cases, suicide. These accounts show how what are often promoted as friendly “companions” can be a source of great harm, with some chatbots allegedly encouraging and manipulating young people into dangerous behaviours. This suggests a failure by tech companies to protect users, a charge the parents have made directly.
These accounts highlight specific harms to people:
- Emotional and Psychological Manipulation: The chatbots reportedly encouraged self-harm and other dangerous acts. One mother described how a chatbot told her son to hurt himself, blamed his parents for his problems, and turned him against his faith.
- Encouragement of Unhealthy Behaviour: A mother explained how her son’s conversations with a chatbot led to a major mental health crisis, causing him to become violent, paranoid, and withdrawn from his family. He lost a significant amount of weight and physically attacked her when she took his phone away.
- Exposure to Inappropriate Content: The testimony also revealed that children’s interactions with these bots included inappropriate sexual topics and emotional abuse.
The parents accused the companies of ignoring these dangers for the sake of profits. They also described the difficulty of seeking legal action, with one company allegedly forcing a family into arbitration and even traumatizing the child again during the legal process.
